Drivers bracing for “intense” close quarters racing of Symmons Plains

Supercars drivers are preparing for “intense”, close quarters racing when they hit the track next weekend at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint.

The Repco Supercars Championship returns to the Apple Isle next weekend to race at Symmons Plains Raceway outside Launceston.

The shortest track and one of the most historic on the 2024 Supercars calendar, Symmons Plains is known and respected for its undulating corners and banked hairpin at Turn 4, which have given drivers and engineers headaches since Supercars’ first visit to the venue in 1969.

Ford drivers James Courtney, Anton De Pasquale, and Matt Payne discussed the circuit’s challenges in the most recent episode of “Drivers Only,” a Supercars podcast on the LiSTNR network.

The NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint is the eighth event on the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship calendar, and comes with the title fight at its hottest.

With a weekend sweep in Sydney in July, Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert has climbed to second in the standings, just 105 points behind championship leader, Will Brown.

Brown won two races at Symmons Plains in 2023 while driving for Erebus Motorsport, and is now partnered with Broc Feeney at Triple Eight, who won the other race at last year’s event.

The 2024 edition of Supercars in Tasmania will feature two races – longer in distance than 2023’s races – with on-track action beginning Friday, August 16.

Festivities around the event kick off Wednesday, August 14, with Supercars’ first ever Hobart street party Princes Wharf, featuring a number of leading drivers and their Gen3 Supercars on the streets of the capital city.

Activities in Launceston get underway Thursday with SuperFest, another free to the public event, featuring a full field signing session and more at the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania.
