Supercars teams have officially arrived on the Gold Coast as fanfare continues to build for this weekend’s Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
Throngs of fans lined the streets of Main Beach Wednesday morning to welcome all 12 Supercars team transporters – carrying all 24 Supercars and their team equipment, totalling over $50 million in cargo – as they made their way into the circuit precinct.
This weekend marks the opening round of the Supercars Finals series, which was launched yesterday in Surfers Paradise.
Rookie Kai Allen was the 10th and final driver to lock himself into the Finals and says he has nothing to lose in his effort to keep his championship hopes alive this weekend.
The 20-year old from Mount Gambier made headlines at last week’s Bathurst 1000, where he narrowly missed a kangaroo while travelling at 260+ kph down Conrod Straight with four laps to go.
The Grove Racing driver, teammates with newly-crowned Bathurst winner Matt Payne, has never raced anything on the unforgiving streets of the Gold Coast, but is eager to hit the track for the first time on Friday.
Teams will spend the rest of today and tomorrow unloading transporters and preparing their garages and race cars before practice officially gets underway on Friday.
The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 takes place October 24-26 on the streets of Surfers Paradise.
