Look back in history Sunday: Mark Winterbottom’s 2006 V8 Supercar at Skope

The Skope Classic this coming weekend at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Christchurch will see what in the future could well be a rare and sought after V8 Supercar from the 2006 to 2008 era.  Mark Winterbottom’s Ford Performance Racing Ford BA Falcon will be driven in the John Osborne Saloon races over the three-day meeting by owner Hayden Knighton.

Winterbottom did quite well in this car which he debuted in 2006, coming third overall in the V8 Supercars Championship.  He won the Sandown 500 and the final race of the season at Phillip Island, plus podiums at Pukekohe, Perth, Hidden Valley, Surfers Paradise, Symmons Plains, Bahrain and Phillip Island.

Jason Bright put the car on the front row of the 2006 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panarama, with co-driver Mark Winterbottom.  On pole was the Holden Commodore VZ of Mark Scaife and Garth Tander.  Unfortunately, it only lasted 28-laps for the Bright/Winterbottom, retiring with engine problems.

It continued to be raced in Supercars for a couple more years including Jonathon Webb winning the 2009 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series.

“I always wanted one of these,” says Knighton.  “Saw it for sale in Aussie so flew over to see it and bought it!”
