Mostert, Brown blown away by “unbelievable” Taupō welcome; Supercars on-track today

Repco Supercars Championship drivers were given the rockstar treatment Thursday afternoon, as thousands welcomed the field to town on the eve of the first day of running at the ITM Taupō Super400.

This weekend marks Supercars’ first ever visit to Taupō International Motorsport Park, with three days of action scheduled from today (Friday).

In another Supercars first, the entire 24-car field partook in a parade from track to town, driving into the heart of Taupō CBD to celebrate the start of an historic weekend for the sport and town.

With thousands lining the streets and packing Taupō CBD for Supercars’ first SuperFest in Taupō, two-time Bathurst 1000 winner Chaz Mostert labelled the vibe as “unbelievable”.

Current championship leader Will Brown resisted the encouragement from fans to do lay down rubber on his Thursday afternoon drive, but will be looking to change that by adding to his 2024 win tally this weekend.

Brown leads the championship by 17 points over Red Bull teammate Broc Feeney, with Mostert a further 80 points back in third entering the third round of the championship.

On-track action at the ITM Taupō Super400 begins Friday with practice, before Supercars holds two 200-kilometre races across Saturday and Sunday.

The driver who scores the most points across the weekend will be awarded the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, named in honour of the beloved Kiwi Supercars driver who passed away from cancer in 2011.

While grandstand and general admission tickets have sold out for Saturday and Sunday, Friday tickets and weekend corporate hospitality options remain available via Supercars.com.

Live coverage of Supercars’ first ever event in Taupō can be found on Sky Sport in New Zealand.
