Kiwi Matt Payne has continued his stranglehold on the Supercars field in Perth, dominating the opening race of the weekend at the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440.
Payne led practice on Friday, has Boost Mobile Pole for both races today in Perth, and has converted the first into victory today in the west.
The 23-year old Aucklander was followed home by best mate and fellow Kiwi Ryan Wood in second for Toyota, while Chevrolet’s Anton De Pasquale rounded out the podium.
While Payne seemed unbeatable in Race 23, his rivals raced for sheep stations, all coming to a head when Payne’s teammate Kai Allen and 2023 Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki tangled at Turn 1.
Kostecki spun into the sand trap and was beached, bringing out the Safety Car and setting up a 7-lap dash to the chequered flag.
The battle to the flag saw more beating and banging, with Cam Waters making up lost ground from a slow pit stop to take fourth and 2025 champion Chaz Mostert fifth.
Allen finished sixth ahead of Broc Feeney, who recovered from a 13th place start to finish seventh.
Payne and Feeney will start from the front row for today’s second race in Perth, which is scheduled to begin at 4:20 p.m. AWST.
