Supercars begin practice this morning for ITM Auckland SuperSprint

Practice gets underway this morning in New Zealand for the 18th Supercars event in New Zealand, the 2018 ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

With mixed weather conditions expected across the weekend, drivers will be desperate to get things right today ahead of Saturday and Sunday’s crucial Championship races.

Before they hit the track today, current Championship leaders Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen said they are pushing friendship aside for the next few weeks with just 14 points separating the New Zealand duo with just two rounds to go this season.

Ahead of today’s opening practice, 2015 Supercars Champion Mark Winterbottom announced last night he will split with Tickford Racing at the end of the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, after 13 seasons.

Winterbottom joined the Ford squad in 2006, winning the championship in ’15 and taking 39 race wins that includes the ’13 Bathurst 1000.

Tickford has announced on the eve of the ITM Auckland SuperSprint that Winterbottom will not continue beyond this month’s 2018 finale in Newcastle.
