The Repco Supercars Championship endurance racing season officially kicks off today, with practice getting underway at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 in Melbourne.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the historic race, and 50th outright endurance race for touring cars/Supercars at the 3.1-kilometre circuit in Springvale.
26 cars and 52 drivers are entered in this year’s event, which was won by Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup in 2023.
The championship battle is at its closest in six years heading into the enduros. Toowoomba’s Will Brown has led the championship since March, but has a charging Chaz Mostert from Walkinshaw Andretti United just 81 points behind.
Feeney lies just 198 back from his teammate Brown, with Tickford’s Cam Waters – who won the most recent race in Tasmania – 350 points off the lead.
Sunday’s race pays 300 points to win, making the long distance races at Sandown and Bathurst crucial in the title tilt.
Three practice sessions are slated for Friday at Sandown, with Boost Mobile Qualifying and the Top Ten Shootout scheduled for Saturday afternoon to set the grid.
Sunday’s 161-lap, 500-kilometre race begins at 2:05 p.m . AEST.
