Tander ready for Sandown as co-driver for Matt Payne

Some of Supercars’ most experienced and winningest drivers get back behind the wheel this weekend, as Supercars goes endurance racing at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500.

Grove Racing’s Garth Tander is one of several living legends of the sport in action this weekend, with the likes of himself, Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup, and other semi-retired stars among those who will race at Sandown and the Bathurst 1000 as co-drivers in the long distance races.

Tander won a dramatic 2016 Sandown 500 for the Holden Racing Team, and is a five-time winner of the Bathurst 1000. His fifth win in 2022 with Shane van Gisbergen was also the 100th podium of Tander’s career.

The 47-year-old is a great chance to add to his trophy tally this weekend, Tander will drive alongside Kiwi Matt Payne in the No. 19 Penrite Ford Mustang. In just his second season Payne is currently fifth in the standings, with a win at the Townsville 500 and three more podiums to his credit in 2024.

Matt Payne action 2024

Tander was off to a strong start in last year’s Sandown 500, running in fourth when the left-rear wheel shockingly fell off his Mustang, sending Tander crashing into the wall at Turn 9.

Payne and Tander were in action last week at Winton Motor Raceway as they completed a critical test day in preparation for this weekend’s race.

On-track action at the 2024 Penrite Oil Sandown 500 begins Friday, September 13, with the historic endurance race to take place on Sunday September 15.
