Van Gisbergen drops-the-ball in Melbourne

Shane van Gisbergen failed to register a lap time in the first qualifying session at the Australian Grand Prix weekend for Race 6 of the Repco Supercars Championship. It came after an accident for Jake Kostecki called an early end to Thursday’s ARMOR ALL Qualifying session which in turn helped David Reynolds, who set a banker lap, secure his 14th career pole and first since Townsville 2019.

“Our first qualifying session didn’t go the way we planned,” explained van Gisbergen. “We planned to come in during the session to change tyres, but then we got a red flag without registering a lap, so that was really unlucky.

“We bounced back in Qualifying 2 and managed to get P3 which was good. The new surface and the new layout is awesome.

“The track overall is tricky and it’s easy to make simple mistakes which can be quite detrimental. I made a few mistakes today and need to be better myself, but lucky we have a few more days out there. I love this event – its always been really cool. There’s a different type of fan here as well and it’s a great track to race on, so I’m looking forward to our races.”

Will Davison set fastest lap in the second qualifying session and will line up alongside Reynolds for Race 7.
