Kiwi F1 driver Liam Lawson has finished out of the points in 14th position in the Italian Grand Prix. Having started from the back of the grid, Mercedes Kimi Antonelli made his way through the field to become the first Italian winner of their home Grand Prix in 60 years, beating teammate George Russell with Lawson’s Oracle Red Bull Racing teammate Max Verstappen third.
“Unbelievable! I’m so happy,” said Antonelli. “I could never have imagined to be here today, but we managed to pull it off. It’s a dream coming true.”
Lawson’s race was compromised right from the beginning. Having started from the pit lane due to both changes to his engine components and then an overnight change to his rear wing, the Kiwi driver made his way up to 11 before pitting.
However, a coming together with Nico Hülkenburg’s Audi damaged his front wing necessitating another pitstop and ending any chance of finishing in the points.
“I didn’t think he’d (Hulkenberg) come over all the way and he just kept coming into my front wing,” Lawson said on his radio at the end of the race.
“It’s a shame, because I think we would have come through (the field).”
Drivers and Teams head to a new circuit in Madrid for the Spanish Grand Prix this coming weekend 11-13 September 2026.
