RallySport Magazine has officially announced the upcoming release of ‘Rally Australia – The Perth Years’, the ultimate historical record of the FIA World Rally Championship event in Western Australia.
Spanning over 400 pages, this new book meticulously documents Rally Australia’s unforgettable Perth years, from early conversations and its 1988 inception to its final event in 2006.
Far more than a simple photo collection, this comprehensive book reveals staggering untold stories alongside spectacular archival imagery, serving as the definitive historical reference for one of the most beloved events in motorsport history.
The project is heavily influenced by the legends who lived it.
“Perth is a beautiful place, a great city filled with friendly people who always made us feel completely welcome,” four-time World Rally Champion and Rally Australia winner, Juha Kankkunen, writes in the foreword. “I am incredibly proud of the success I had there.”
Garry Connelly, the driving force behind the event, also offers his own personal introduction to the history in ‘Rally Australia – The Perth Years’.
“I thought I knew a lot about the event, but this book reveals many facts that were previously unknown to me,” he reveals.
Authored by the country’s premier rally journalist, Peter Whitten, the book has been years in the making, aimed squarely at rally fans, collectors, and the thousands of volunteer officials who made Rally Australia possible.
“We wanted to create something that wasn’t just a recap of the events, but a permanent tribute to the era of Langley Park, the Bunnings jumps, and the unique red dust of WA,” Whitten said.
“The scale of the book is massive. From Juha and Garry’s recollections and the behind-the-scenes insights I’ve learned from rally people across the country, to the hundreds of photos that have never seen the light of day, it’s been a privilege to compile.
“I’m sure this will be the historical archive that this era of Rally Australia deserves.”
Printing is scheduled to commence in December, with physical books expected to be dispatched to buyers in April 2027.
