The dilemma for RB Honda RBPT’s Lawson, Tsunoda

More positives for Liam Lawson after the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix.  He didn’t crash and finished both the Sprint race and the Grand Prix.  The overriding negative is that both he and RB Honda RBPT teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, failed to score pivotal points for the team in the Constructors’ Championship while rivals Alpine Renault and Haas Ferrari both had drivers finish in the points.  Is this a reflection on the RB Honda RBPT drivers or does it convey where the car’s development is, at the end of the 2024 season.

With one Formula One Grand Prix remaining for the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 2024 Constructors’ championship is still side open for the key sixth place fight between Haas Ferrari, Alpine Renault and RB Honda RBPT.

Heading into the Grand Prix, Haas Ferrari held sixth on 52 points with Alpine Renault on 49 ahead of RB Honda RBPT on 46.

While Alpine Renault teammate Estaban Ocon retired on the opening lap, Pierre Gasly finished superbly in fifth, propelling the team into sixth (59 points), five-points ahead of Haas Ferrari whose Kevin Magnesson finished in ninth place and a valuable two-points.  Meanwhile, RB Honda stay on 46 with both drivers finishing outside a points scoring position.

Gasly is on a roll, twice finishing in the top five in the last three races.  Alpine Renault will be hard to beat, Haas Renault continue to be consistent while it’s difficult to expect any major improvement for Lawson and Tsunoda. Maybe there is no dilemma for RB Honda and their fate is sealed by the current speed of the car versus their rivals. Still, it could be different with lady-luck playing her part in the final race in a week’s time.
