With over 100 confirmed entries the annual Hampton Downs Top Half Series’ round at Whangarei’s WRB Karting Supplies Raceway this weekend will be one of the biggest on the KartSport Whangarei club’s calendar.
And that is just fine by series’ promoter Roger Smith.
“One of the good things about running the Hampton Downs Top Half Series is getting competitors to travel, particularly to our smaller member club tracks like Whangarei and Edgecumbe.
“I’ve said before that it’s good for our drivers, because they get to learn other tracks and race against other drivers, but it is also good for the host clubs because it gives them and the town or city nearest a real financial boost.”
Set up over 24 years ago now by the KartSport Auckland, Mt Wellington, and Hamilton clubs, the series is run each year in conjunction with the five other clubs in the northern half of the North Island; KartSport Whangarei, KartSport Bay of Plenty, KartSport Tokoroa, KartSport Rotorua and KartSport Eastern Bay of Plenty.
A bumper prize pool has been a major drawcard in recent years. This year is no different with over $37,000 worth of product and/or cash up for grabs.
As well as individual glory for the drivers, the member clubs also compete every year for the prestigious Roundabout Kart Shop Trophy.
Heading the points standings in each class after the first two rounds are Riley Boswell (International Kart Supplies Cadet ROK), Mitchell Sparrow (Supreme Kart Supplies Vortex Mini ROK), Josh Richmond (pictured) (Spartan Auto Dismantlers Junior Rotax), Leo Scott and Ayrton Williams tied for first place in (Supreme Kart Supplies Vortex DVS Junior), Graeme Smyth (Westspeed Motorsport KZ2), Jason Lee (Right Karts Rotax DD2), Ashton Grant (Urban Performance Rotax Max Light), Aarron Cunningham and Caleb Hartley tied for first place in (TCB Motorsport Rotax Max Heavy) and Stephen Muggeridge (WRB Karting Supplies ClubSport 120).
Earning $500 each for their efforts meanwhile in winning the reverse grid Dash for Cash races sponsored by Giltrap Group/Robert Cunningham Construction/Duffett Doors were top female racer Breanna Morris at the first round in Hamilton and Mitchell Sparrow at the second in Auckland.
