After starting the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 from pole position, Kiwi driver Scott Dixon has survived a horrific crash on lap 53/100 with US based Brit and former Toyota Racing Series driver Jay Howard.
“(I’m) a little beaten up there,” commented Dixon. “It was definitely a rough ride.”
Howard’s car hit the wall and came down on the track in which Dixon had no way to avoid the ensuing crash.
“I’m ‘bummed’ for the team, we had a great shot.”
After leading the opening laps, Dixon had been running down in eighth place.
“We got a little loose on the first stint but they dialed it in (pitstop) and we were making some progress. Overall, we were a little bit light on down force but I think that later on in the race it would have been the right move to have.
“I’m glad everyone is OK, it was definitely a wide ride. “A big thanks to Dallara and the safety standards that we have today.
“It’s tough, when you make those decisions on which way to go, you’re hoping that the car, Jay, would stay against the wall but he came down. I had already picked that way to go and there was no way to try and avoid him. I’m glad he’s ok too.”
