Technical Tuesday: FIA Formula 2 unveils its new car for the 2027-2029 seasons

The FIA Formula 2 Championship has presented its new challenger for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 FIA F2 seasons during a special unveiling in the Formula 1 paddock at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Building on the success of the current generation, the F2 2027 car represents a significant evolution designed to further strengthen the Championship’s role as the final step on the pathway to Formula 1.

The car retains the 2026 Dallara chassis to help manage costs, but features redesigned front and rear wings. The improved aerodynamic characteristics will enable closer racing and enhance the drivers’ ability to closely follow the car ahead, while the styling brings it closer to the latest F1 design philosophy.

Powering the car is the proven 3.4-litre turbo-charged Mecachrome engine, which continues to run on advanced sustainable fuel supplied by Aramco, first successfully introduced to the series in 2025. Pirelli, F2’s exclusive tyre supplier since 2017, will continue to provide tyres specifically developed for the championship.

One of the key technical evolutions introduced for the 2027 generation is the addition of an on-board starter. To accommodate this feature, Hewland has developed an evolution of the current gearbox, enabling the integration of the on-board starter system.

The F2 2027 car retains the FIA’s 2024 specifications for braking performance, steering effort and cockpit ergonomics, ensuring the car remains accessible to a broad range of drivers. The Marelli electronic and hydraulic systems package also remain the same, including the EM Motorsport Marshalling system.
