At the sixth and final event of the Formula 4 Southeast Asia Championship held in Malaysia last weekend, New Zealand driver Faine Kahia was officially announced as the second place champion with only two points separating him from first. As a result of Kahia’s success he has gained the rare opportunity to test a GP2 car as well as a test with the Lamborghini Works Team.
Kahia achieved three more podiums at the final F4SEA event and his efforts were enough to hold onto the lead of the championship right up to the very last race of the 36-race season. Kahia and the team worked on resolving mechanical issues from the previous event that had continued into the final races, but in the end Indonesia’s Presley Martono closed the gap enough to take the lead from Kahia by a mere two points. “It was so close and came right down to the wire but I enjoyed battling it out with Presley in the early races of the weekend. It has been an amazing experience in F4SEA. We conquered some huge challenges along the way and I am happy to have been right at the top”, said Kahia.
The final weekend was rounded off with the Meritus Awards Gala evening on Sunday at which Kahia received the ‘Meritus Award for National Rising Star – New Zealand’. The Taupo driver’s success throughout the season saw Kahia represent New Zealand on the podium a staggering 21 times, including six race wins and overall winner of Event 5 in Thailand. Upon being officially announced as the F4SEA second place champion, Kahia was rewarded with the prestigious opportunities of testing a GP2 car as well as a test with the Lamborghini Works Team. “These opportunities are huge in the motorsport world, especially for a Kiwi like me, it is the chance of a lifetime. I am going to do my absolute best to impress at these test sessions and work hard towards a new positive step for my career. A lot of cool stuff is happening and I hope to make some further announcements soon.”
