McElrea ends 2016 with dominant State Championship win

Sixteen year old, NZ Elite Motorsport academy driver Hunter McElrea has ended the year on a high taking his fourth Queensland Formula Ford State Championship win in a row at Morgan Park.

Starting the round off in style, McElrea was able to clinch Pole position by a full second over the second placed Tom Corbett.

“Qualifying was a pleasant surprise to be honest, I knew I had some good pace heading in to the weekend but I wasn’t expecting to have the margin I did in qualifying!” said Hunter.

McElrea was then able to steer his RF91 Van Diemen to a dominant clean sweep of race wins and ultimately clinch the round victory in his last event in the car.

“It’s a little sad to be honest, it was my last weekend in my State Championship car” Hunter said. “It was the first car I raced in and I was able to learn a lot about how to drive fast and had many awesome memories driving it!”

Hunter now switches his focus to preparations bigger and better things for next year.
