The NZIGP Legends of Speed event is scheduled for this weekend (25–26 January 2025) at Hampton Downs. Bringing together an array of motorsport classes, the event pays tribute to one of New Zealand’s most accomplished drivers, David Oxton. This two-day event offers a diverse mix of historic and contemporary racing, celebrating the country’s rich motorsport heritage.
The central focus of the event is celebrating the career of David Oxton, a name well-known in New Zealand’s motorsport circles. Oxton’s achievements include winning eight national championships, with five Gold Star titles. His journey began with a standout performance in the 1971 Tasman Series, driving a March Formula 1 car. He followed this with victories in the Formula Ford and Formula Pacific categories, including pole position at the Formula Ford World Cup at Brands Hatch and a win at the 1983 New Zealand Grand Prix.
To honour Oxton’s legacy, a Legends Dinner will be held on Saturday, 25 January, in the Hampton Downs Pavilion. This special evening will include appearances by motorsport icons such as David Oxton himself, Dick Bennetts, Craig Baird, and Paul Radisich – just to name a few.

Classes in attendance include Formula Open New Zealand, Formula 5000, NZ Sports Cars, Formula First, BMW 1 Hour Endurance Race (Saturday only), Historic Muscle and Saloon Cars, Heritage Touring Cars, Historic and Vintage Racing Association, Pre65 / Super Mini Challenge, Touring Car Masters / NZ Six, Formula Junior / Historic Formula Ford (Saturday only), VCC Roycroft Trophy Races (Sunday only).

The NZIGP Legends of Speed event and function is a fitting tribute to New Zealand’s motorsport heritage. With a packed schedule of competitive racing and the opportunity to reflect on the achievements of one of the country’s most celebrated drivers, the event promises to be a highlight of the 2025 motorsport calendar.
