Supercars action has officially kicked off at the NTI Townsville 500, with Ford star Cam Waters topping the time sheets Friday’s first practice session.
Waters – a two-time winner on the streets of Townsville – was followed by Tickford Racing teammate Thomas Randle in second, with championship leader Will Brown third.
The 40-minute session ran without disruption, but saw plenty of drivers testing the limits of the 2.86-kilometre street circuit, with more than a few brushes off the wall and cars skidding off-track.
James Courtney, who took a race win at the inaugural Townsville Supercars event in 2009, was fourth quickest, with Kiwi young gun Matt Payne in fifth as Fords took five of the top seven spots in a strong start to the weekend.
The 24-car Supercars field returns to the track for Practice 2 at 3:10 p.m. AEST for another 40-minute session, Supercars’ final practice session of the weekend.
Live coverage of the NTI Townsville 500 can be found on the Seven Network and Foxtel, with live streaming available on 7plus and Kayo.
Following this afternoon’s second practice session, Supercars will next hit the track Saturday morning for Boost Mobile Qualifying.
The Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout at midday will finalise the starting grid for Race 13 of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship, a 250-kilometre contest on the streets of Reid Park.
Saturday’s on-track action will be followed up by some of the biggest music acts to hit the stage in Townsville, with Tones & I, G Flip, and Cyril set to thrill fans inside the circuit on Saturday night.
General admission, corporate hospitality and grandstand tickets for the 2024 NTI Townsville 500 running 5-7 July are available through Supercars.com.
