Final race before The Chase for SVG

Shane van Gisbergen will make his fifth NASCAR Cup Series start at the iconic Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway this Saturday night, starting 7:30pm local time. Ahead of the 400-mile Coke Zero Sugar 400 race, van Gisbergen looks to secure his spot in The Chase. He currently sits in the final spot (16th), 31 points above the cutline.

“It’s really hard to know, it’s such an unknown track,” commented SVG. “It’s typical Daytona, just a lot of unknown. Would have loved to leave New Hampshire last weekend with more of a cushion of course, like we entered with. But the #60 (Ryan Preece) did a great job. The team and I will be working all week to have a plan heading into Saturday night’s race, just have to focus on executing.”

Drafting Track Stats: This season, van Gisbergen has three finishes of sixth-place or better in five drafting track starts with an average finish of 13.6. In February at the Daytona 500, van Gisbergen started 13th and led 3 laps, before being collected in a multi-car incident in Stage 2.

“I try to maximize all the bad days, I think. Every point counts, so when we are having a bad day, we still have to get the most out of it. So maybe in that part it does help, being in season long championships all my life. It’s a cool feeling knowing that we have a shot at making The Chase. It’s a cool pressure to feel.”
