Championship leader Brown tops tight opening Darwin practice

Repco Supercars Championship leader Will Brown (No. 87 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet Camaro) has topped a tightly contested opening session of the betr Darwin Triple Crown.

Supercars hit the track late this morning in the Top End for a 60-minute practice session, with full field qualifying to come this afternoon.

Toowoomba’s Brown narrowly edged out James Golding (No. 31 Nulon Chevrolet Camaro) from PremiAir Nulon Racing in the incident-free session, with the 28-year old impressing with a lap just 0.01 of a second slower than Brown’s quick time.

2023 Darwin race winner Jack Le Brocq (No. 9 Tyrepower Chevrolet Camaro) was third followed by Kiwi Andre Heimgartner (No. 8 R&J Batteries Chevrolet Camaro) in fourth, both of them just 0.05 of a second off the top time.

All 25 cars were within one second of Brown’s fast lap, indicating another air tight weekend on the cards at Hidden Valley Raceway.

While Chevrolet Camaros took the top four spots in the session, the Tickford Racing Ford Mustangs of Cam Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) and Thomas Randle (No. 55 Castrol Ford Mustang) led the way for the Blue Oval in fifth and seventh.

Supercars return to the track at 2:35 p.m. ACST for Boost Mobile Qualifying, setting the majority of the grid for Saturday’s Race 11 of the 2024 championship.

The fastest 10 cars from qualifying this afternoon will contest the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout on Saturday to determine pole position for the 139-kilometre race.

The betr Darwin Triple Crown is Supercars’ official Indigenous Roud, with all 25 entered Supercars sporting unique indigenous-themed liveries in celebration of indigenous culture across Australia.

Should a driver finish all three days this weekend in 1st place – taking provisional pole today and race wins on both Saturday and Sunday – they will be awarded the Darwin Triple Crown, which has only been won twice in the event’s history.
