It will be interesting to see how the keyboard weekend warriors rate the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship now that the last race is done and dusted. It has been an up and down season for the organisers but one thing is clear, Scott McLaughlin is the 2019 title winner and a worthy one at that.
The tussle for the team title came down to the last round and it is fitting that it has been won by McLauhglin’s Shell V-Power Racing Team.
We have seen a year where the team took an incredible 20 victories across the 32-race season. This included the coveted Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, securing the Teams’ title and the number one pit garage for the 2020 season.
It hasn’t been a straight forward season for Supercars with several attempts at parity issues after it appeared that the new Ford Mustang was quicker than the Holden Commodore ZB, winning the first seven races on the trot.
Arguably the series has become a bit like Formula One where, at the end of the season, we have race wins being decided between the top four drivers from two teams.
We may have seen more parity but there is certainly a gap between the top two teams and the rest of the field.
Other than Chaz Mostert’s (Supercheap Auto Racing) single race win at the Australian Grand Prix meeting (race 5), all other races were won by either the Shell V-Power Racing Team (McLaughlin x 18, Fabian Coulthard x 2) or Red Bull Holden Racing (Shane van Gisbergen x 5, Jamie Whincup x 5 + Craig Lowndes x 1(co-drivers race Sandown 500)) .
It is McLaughlin’s second consecutive drivers title and heading into 2020 he will be the driver to beat. It has been a season where he established a significant lead in the championship in the first half of the season, winning 12 of the first 16 races.
He is the 2019 champion and worthy of the title.
