Mostert, Payne expect to “put on a show” at AusGP

Supercars stars Chaz Mostert and Matt Payne believe the recent trend of wild Supercars races at the Australian Grand Prix will continue yet again this weekend in Melbourne.

The Repco Supercars Championship contesting four sprint races at the Melbourne SuperSprint at Albert Park.

With no compulsory pit stops and a fast, wide track, drivers’ only way to win is to get past the cars ahead, which has led to barnstorming action on the track in recent years.

Speaking at Tuesday’s Foxtel Motorsport Launch, 2025 Supercars champion Mostert and 2025 Repco Bathurst 1000 winner Payne say to expect more of the same when Supercars hit the track this week.

Mostert and Payne were joined by their teammates Ryan Wood and Kai Allen at Tuesday’s function, along with fellow Supercars Chief Executive James Warburton, chairman Barclay Nettlefold, and broadcast talent including Jess Yates, Chad Neylon, Mark Winterbottom, and more.

Mostert is heading into his second event racing the Toyota GR Supra, after his team Walkinshaw TWG Racing swapped from Ford to bring the Japanese giant into Supercars in 2026.

It was a solid, if unspectacular, debut for Toyota in Sydney just under a fortnight ago, Mostert recording his first top five finish on Sunday at the DUNLOP Sydney 500 in late February.

Payne enters the weekend tied for the championship lead with Broc Feeney after a strong opening weekend.

The 23-year old from Auckland notched finishes of fourth, third, and second in Sydney, setting a promising trend heading into this weekend’s racing.

On-track action begins Thursday at the Melbourne SuperSprint, with Supercars racing each day of the event in support of the Formula One Australian Grand Prix.

The driver who scores the most points across the event to be awarded the Larry Perkins Trophy.
