Ross Chastain led Trackhouse Racing with a fifth-place finish in the Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday. Teammates Connor Zilisch placed seventh, and Shane van Gisbergen finished 23rd.
“A long day for my #97 SuperFile team,” commented SVG. “We didn’t qualify great, so started at the back. Then just struggled with the handling of my Chevy all race.
“My team worked hard to make the right adjustments and we seemed to move forward towards the end and was in a good position to get a decent result out of it, then got wrecked there at the end. Definitely a shame, could have gotten a top-10.”
Van Gisbergen started 35th for the 240-lap race near St. Louis. From the start, he continually battled the handling of his SuperFile Chevrolet.
An on-track incident and a spin on lap 28 hindered van Gisbergen’s opportunity to steadily work forward, finishing the stage, 27th.
The #97 team came to pit road for service and adjustments at the stage break. SVG then lined up 28th to start the second stage and continued to struggle with the balance of his car despite the team’s efforts to make improvements. He finished the second stage, 28th.
For the final stage, van Gisbergen started 30th and steadily found pace, working up way up into the top 20. During the final 100 laps, multiple cautions flew and van Gisbergen was in position for a top 10 finish before being spun on the restart with two laps remaining. He was credited with a 23rd place finish.
The NASCAR Cup Series will return to action Saturday, September 19 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race.
