Payne pulls off Ipswich double pole in Ipswich – Brown back in the mix

Supercars championship leader Matt Payne has stormed to Boost Mobile Pole for both Supercars races today at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440.

The 23-year old Kiwi soared to pole by eclipsing Friday’s fast man Brodie Kostecki in the dying stages of both Boost Mobile Qualifying sessions.

Remarkably, his pole in the second qualifying session was achieved on a used set of Super Soft tyres, while rivals set their fastest laps on new tyres.

They are Payne’s sixth and seventh poles of the 2026 season, tying and surpassing Kostecki for most of all drivers this year.

Kostecki will start second for both of today’s races, setting up a fascinating head-to-head battle between two of the sport’s hottest talents.

Toowoomba’s Will Brown the feel good story of the morning, qualifying fourth and third for today’s races.

Brown was in the news last week after his Triple Eight team discovered an undersized air restrictor on his car last week, which had been hampering his engine performance through the 2026 season to date.

After transaxle issues ruled him out of the majority of practice yesterday, the 2024 Supercars champion was elated to be back near the top of the time sheets.

2025 Supercars champion Chaz Mostert will start third and fourth for today’s races, with Gold Coaster Broc Feeney and 20-year old South Australian Kai Allen sharing the third row for both of today’s races.

Race 26 of the 2026 Supercars season begins at 12:45 p.m., with Race 27 to follow at 4:15 p.m.

Entering today with a 118-point lead over Broc Feeney, Payne can clinch the Repco Sprint Cup by extending that lead to above 145 points by the end of play today.
