Overnight the doubting Thomas’ have rejoined the Liam Lawson fan club while those that have kept the faith in the Kiwi F1 driver are quietly chuffed with his qualifying performance at the Red Bull Ring which is hosting the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. Not only did Lawson make it through to the top ten and Q3, but he will also start from P6 which is ahead of his Racing Bulls teammate Isack Hadjar (P13), well ahead of his replacement at Red Bull Racing, Yuki Tsunoda (P18) and one position ahead of former teammate Max Verstappen (P7).
“I’m really pleased to have made it through to Q3, it’s a great result and I’m very happy with how everything came together,” Lawson commented. “I’ve never seen such a close Qualifying before, so it’s nice to be on the right side of it this time. We’ve had the pace over the last few races, but today it finally clicked, and we managed to put it all together.”

His demeanour is somewhat similar to pole-sitter Lando Norris (McLaren). Both coming back from a gloomy patch. Both with renewed self-confidence.
“Tomorrow is when it really counts,” commented Lawson. “It’s going to be a tough race with the field so tightly packed, and we’ll do our best to keep the competition behind us. The strategy remains quite open, we will work hard over night to put the plan together. My focus will be on getting a clean start and making the right decisions in the car.”
Lawson is correct in that Sunday’s Grand Prix is where it really counts. A strong finish, ideally in the points, is what matters and the key to that is a top qualifying result on Saturday. Often that is where the hard work is done and puts a driver on the front foot.
This is the Lawson we know and have faith in.
