An engine misfire ended top Kiwi karter Ryan Grant’s podium charge in the KZ2 class at the third round of this year’s Australian Kart Championship at Monarto in South Australia over the weekend.

The Auckland ace qualified second, won one of the four heats and finished second in two of the others and was in second place in the Final when the misfire slowed and eventually stopped his charge.

“Yeah,” he said from the track on Sunday, “it was a bummer but them’s the breaks I guess. Before that we were having a good weekend, with good speed and a good run in qualifying too.

“I got taken out in the first heat but with the first and seconds in the other heats I started the Final P2. I got shuffled back to fifth early on but got back to second before the misfire started with 10 laps to go.”

The other Kiwi competing at the event, youngster Liam Sceats also from Auckland, showed good pace for his first time at the Monarto track, qualifying 19th in the Cadet 12 class and after a best placing of 15th in the heats, finished 16th in the Final.

The weekend’s round of the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol Edge was the third of five with the next at Ipswich in Queensland over the July 2-3 weekend.
