Prince Jefri Ibrahim and Nick Foster won the season opening Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS race at the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia, on Saturday after the Triple Eight JMR’s #99 Mercedes-AMG picked its way through from fifth on the grid.
EBM Giga Racing’s Porsches shared by Adrian D’Silva and Earl Bamber (#11 Porsche 911 GT3 R) , and Setiawan Santoso and Reid Harker (#8 Porsche 911 GT3 R) – who set fastest lap – completed the podium.
Harker’s fastest lap underlined the 911’s pace, while Bamber chipped away at but never threatened Foster’s lead.
Earlier in the day Naoki Yokomizo (Race 1 Qualifying ) and Earl Bamber (Race 2 qualifying) each claimed a pole position after topping their respective qualifying sessions in the morning.
Bamber had already served notice by setting the fastest time across testing and practice, and he duly delivered on that potential by lapping eight tenths faster than anyone else in qualifying.
Both of the EBM Porsche’s consecutive laps were fast enough for pole, but it was the Yokomizo’s (Ferrari 488 GT3) 2m05.575s that now stands as the weekend’s quickest time.
Sunday sees the second 60min race set to go at 12:00 local time.
