It was practice day at Teretonga Park near Invercargill today as the Speedworks Motorsport NZ Championship got underway at the track but already there are many trucks, caravans and campervans parked in place ready for their occupants to enjoy an action packed weekend of top class motorsport.

Southlanders can look forward to BNT V8’s, NZ Super Trucks, the up and coming international stars of the Castrol Toyota Racing Series plus several other categories on both Saturday and Sunday.

English based Frenchman Clement Novalak set the fastest time of the day in the second session for the Toyota Racing Series cars but the times are so close throughout the field that some big battles are assured this weekend. Local driver Brendon Leitch is right on the pace and will definitely be a big factor throughout the weekend.

Malcolm Little of Upper Hutt and his son Alex were the fastest in the NZ Super Trucks while Josh Bethune of Auckland managed the best time of the day early on in the Formula 1600 class with Callum Hedge of Auckland fastest in the other two sessions but just shy of his time. Christchurch driver Paul Kelly was the only driver to break the minute mark in the Pirelli Porsche field while Michael Scott of Te Puke was fastest in the Toyota 86 sessions. Matt Edgar from Lake Hawea was the quickest of the OSCA Super Saloons while the BNT V8’s, featuring the likes of Andre Heimgartner, Jason Bargwanna and local driver Liam MacDonald, do not take to the track until tomorrow.

The action gets underway on both Saturday and Sunday from 9am with Saturday commencing with qualifying sessions before racing gets underway. Tomorrow also sees the Speed Works Rush Hour race late in the day with some exciting cars on the entry list.
