Australian heritage drivers to cross the ditch for George Begg Festival

George Begg Festival 2025 is earmarked as an event not to be missed in the motorsport world, so much so, that international drivers are already lining up to take part at Teretonga Park in Invercargill, 10-13 April 2025.

Australian heritage racers Rick Allen and Meon Nehrybecki are making the trip south and could not be more excited to hit the track in April.

For both drivers, it’s their first time competing at the George Begg Festival. “It’s always been on my wish list to do,” Rick said.

Rick will be bringing over his BMW E30 M3 (main photo), which he has owned since 1998. There was selected heritage race meets Rick attended in Australia each year, with only between four and five held for his particular class.

George Begg Festival – detail and update

“I just really enjoy racing the car.”

He was most looking forward to meeting a whole bunch of new people at the George Begg Festival, all of whom share the same passion for racing. He was also looking forward to coming to the deep south.

“We really do like the south of the south.”

As for Meon, anticipation was high for going head-to-head with a good bunch of blokes, in some great racing at the George Begg Festival.

“Rick sort of talked me into it,” Meon said, “but I’d always had some aspirations to do some international racing.”

Meon will be bringing his Mercedes Benz Sonax 190E 2.5 16v DTM (main photo) which promises to turn some heads. Only 17 of the 2.5 models were ever made.

“It’s obviously quite a historic car… it’ll be quite a crowd pleaser.”

The men will first hit the track at the Skope Classic in Canterbury in the last weekend of January before the cars journey south ahead of the George Begg Festival in April.

“I’ve always thought that (Skope Classic), looks a lot of fun,” Rick said.

The duo will join other drivers from all over to compete at next year’s festival, including already announced local legend Emma Gilmour.
