Andrew Rudd of Tinwald in Mid Canterbury set the fastest time of the day at the Classic Motorcycle Mecca Burt Munro Challenge Bluff Hillclimb in Bluff on Thursday.
Rudd, riding a Honda CRF450 in the Golden Age Tavern & Anchorage Cafe Bar Up to 600cc Class, set a time of 51.66 seconds in his second run of the day to win his class and set the day’s fastest time to the summit of Bluff Hill. Wet, slippery conditions favoured the lighter bikes over those with more power and Rudd capitalised to win the Southland Motorcycle Club Trophy for the fastest time.
Tony Rees of Whakatane won the Bluff Four Square Supermarket Open Class on his Honda CBR 1000RR with a best of 52.88 seconds while the other New Zealand title winner was Tim George of Amberley in the Challenge Bluff/Nev’s Glass ATV Quad Class.
Other class winners on the hill were Gary Wells of Invercargill (Southern Suzuki/Mocha Rocka Coffee Classic Pre 63), another Invercargill rider, Chris McMeeken, in the South Port NZ Ltd Post Classic Pre 82 Class and Whangarei rider Duncan Coutts in the Foveaux Dairy/Gasoline Alley Services Post Classic Pre 89 Class.
The crowd lost the opportunity to witness the talents of UK rider Guy Martin on the hill as the weather made conditions treacherous for the 320hp turbocharged Suzuki GSX R 1100.
