Look back in history Sunday: A MotoGP champ and Rally Monza

How does a multiple MotoGP World Champion end up having the most victories at Rally Monza? Maybe because Valentino Rossi is an Italian driver and Rally Monza is his home event.

The final round of the World Rally Championship, Rally Monza, is currently underway and will determine the 2020 title holder. Since its debut in 1978 it has been won every year, bar four, by Italian drivers. Rossi has the most at seven.

It’s the first time that Rally Monza has made an appearance on the WRC calendar and has been described as the most compact traditional WRC event in terms of distance, taking place around the Lake Como area.

The three non-Italian winners are Dani Sordo (2010, 2013), Sebastien Loeb (2011) Robert Kubica (2014).

Rossi’s first win was back in 2006 (the same year he competed in Rally New Zealand) and he last won it in 2018.
