He may not be racing in the Toyota Racing Series this season but Damon Leitch of Invercargill was still in the thick of the motor racing action this weekend.
Driving the Ralt RT4 Formula Atlantic car owned by his father Barry, Damon secured four wins from four starts at the Highlands Motorsport Park Festival Of Speed meeting in Cromwell and also set a new lap record for Formula Libre cars at the circuit.
Leitch enjoyed some good battles over the weekend with Andrew Waite who was at the wheel of a Formula 5000 car. The two battled it out in the first three races before Waite’s car struck problems and did not compete in the fourth. The Leitch Ralt had superior speed through the corners while Waite’s bigger Formula 5000 car had much more speed on the straights. However Leitch took victory in each of their clashes.
Damon Leitch has spent the last five New Zealand summers racing in the Toyota Racing Series, twice finishing as top kiwi and twice finishing in the top three in the series. His only competitive motor race since last year’s Toyota Racing Series saw him win the Wigram Cup at Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Christchurch.
