This Sunday at the Brickyard, Shane van Gisbergen will make his second NASCAR Cup Series start at the Indianapolis (Ind.) Motor Speedway (IMS) traditional oval track competing in the Brickyard 400.
“It’s (IMS) tough,” commented SVG. “You have to qualify well, which we did last year. It’s nearly impossible to pass there, so qualifying is a big focus.”
In 2025, van Gisbergen qualified 11th at the 2.5-mile track but ultimately finished 19th. In 2023, van Gisbergen made a start at the Indianapolis Road Course in the No. 91 Trackhouse PROJECT91 Entry. He started eighth and finished 10th.
“We had an issue last year that dropped us back during the race. So, we just need to get up front and stay there all day. Indy is such a cool track, so I’m looking forward to it. We have a 50-minute practice session on Friday and that will help a lot in preparation for Sunday’s race.”
Last Weekend at North Wilkesboro he delivered his strongest oval performance to date in the NASCAR Cup Series last weekend at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway finishing fifth and matching the best oval result of his Cup Series career.
“I’m definitely getting better at the drafting tracks. But on the intermediates, I’m weak and we are weak as a team. We really need to improve as a team on those type of tracks.”
Point Standings: Van Gisbergen enters this weekend at Indianapolis 14th in the Cup Series driver standings, 54 points above The Chase cutline.
