A crash put to an end Shane van Gisbergen’s Sunday afternoon competing in the Anduril 250 NASCAR Cup Series at the Qualcomm Circuit in San Diego.
Starting from pole position for the 75-lap race, Van Gisbergen controlled the race for the first four laps before dropping to second.
He struggled to find rear grip on his Red Bull Chevrolet, but strategy played a big part in the competition, and the No. 97 team opted to stay out when the caution fell on lap 12.
Van Gisbergen and team came to pit road with three laps left in the stage and finished the stage 27th.
In the second stage, van Gisbergen started seventh and battled to the front while running lap times two and three seconds faster than the field.
A caution fell on lap 29 and van Gisbergen lined up third for the restart. Unfortunately, van Gisbergen was involved in an accident on the restart that ended his day.
“It’s a real shame,” commented SVG. “The Red Bull Chevy was unreal and super fast once the track kind of rubbered up. Just a real shame.”
Ross Chastain led Trackhouse Racing with a seventh-place finish, former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen placed 27th, Shane van Gisbergen was credited with a 37th-place finish and Connor Zilisch 38th.
The NASCAR Cup Series will return to action Sunday, June 28 for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in Northern California.
