No cook-up for SVG in the Cook Out Southern 500

Shane van Gisbergen led Trackhouse Racing with a 26th-place finish in the Cook Out Southern 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway on Sunday evening. Teammates Ross Chastain placed 27th, and Connor Zilisch finished 34th.

“It was a difficult night for my 97 Red Bull team, just struggled with the balance of my Chevy all race,” commented SVG. “Stephen (Doran) and the team worked hard to make good adjustments to the car and it seemed to get better there at the end. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t get a better result.”

Van Gisbergen started the 500 mile race in 26th after practice and qualifying was cancelled due to inclement weather on Saturday. At the start of the race he dropped back quickly battling the handling of his Red Bull Chevrolet, finishing the stage 35th.

He charged his way forward in stage 2 before making a green flag pit stop on lap 152. Van Gisbergen continued to struggle with the grip of his race car and finished the stage in 32nd place.

In the final stage, the handling of van Gisbergen’s Chevrolet steadily improved and he was able to work forward and was credited with a 26th-place finish.

The NASCAR Cup Series will return to action Sunday, September 13 at World Wide Technology Raceway in St. Louis, Missouri.
