Best of the rest – Points for Lawson

Normal transmission has been restored with Kiwi driver Liam Lawson finishing in the points at the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.  Sixth place was the best of the rest of the field with McLaren filling the first two spots followed by the two Ferrari’s and the sole Williams of George Russell. Lando Norris took the win from Oscar Piastri, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

The solid result moves Lawson’s Racing Bulls Team into sixth place in the Constructor’s Championship, now seven points ahead of Haas F1 Team. Haas’ Esteban Ocon finished tenth ahead of teammate Oliver Bearman. Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg both finished in the points (8th and 9th) continuing their team’s resurgence and third consecutive points-scoring weekend. They sit ninth overall on 26-points and have certainly joined the mid-field rivalry in the Constructor’s Championship.

“It was a great weekend, and it feels good to execute everything well,” commented Lawson.  It’s been a tough season so far, with a lot of potential, and in this race, we were quick where it mattered and managed to see it through.”

Lawson just avoided being hit at the second turn on Lap 1 after Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) locked up when braking and hit Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing), both retiring out of the race.

“After the first lap, I thought it might be over, but the team made a brave call with the one-stop strategy, it worked out perfectly. Full credit to them, they’ve been working incredibly hard behind the scenes, and I’m super proud.”

After some odd strategy calls from the team in previous races, they seem to have got it right this weekend with the call for a one stop strategy.

Lawson’s second points scoring result this season sees him 15th in the Driver’s Championship after slowly rebuilding and gaining his confidence back after a difficult debut with the sister Red Bull Team in the first two Grand Prix of the 2025 season.

“The car was really fast all weekend, we’re constantly pushing and making small adjustments to make it more comfortable.”

The British Grand Prix takes place this coming weekend (4-7 July 2025).

“The goal now is to carry this momentum through the rest of the season. We need to take the positives, keep fighting, and keep scoring points.”
