It’s almost worse than pulling teeth. At last, Red Bull F1 driver Sergio Perez has announced his exit from the team after what seemed like unnecessary protracted negotiations.
We don’t know the ins and outs of discussions but his tenure with Red Bull Racing was always limited due to an unreliable racing record over the 2024 season. While teammate Max Verstappen won the Driver’s Championship, his lack of consistency and results have been a major factor in the team not securing the critical Manufacturers title.
“After four incredible seasons together, Oracle Red Bull Racing and Sergio Perez have reached an agreement to part ways,” a Red Bull statement said.
“During this time Checo played a crucial role in securing multiple Grand Prix wins, countless podium finishes, and two Constructors’ World Championships, significantly contributing to the team’s most successful era in Formula One.”
Now his departure paves the way for either Kiwi Liam Lawson or Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda to take his seat alongside World Champion Max Verstappen.
With just 11 Grand Prix starts, Lawson is tipped to take the seat ahead of the more experienced Tsunoda. With four seasons under his belt, Tsunoda’s talent could be described as ordinary, and one would have to question whether he has what it takes to win or even podium and be able to play an important support role for Verstappen.
Although Lawson has been impressive in each of his F1 outings, there is a good argument that he needs more seat time with his RB Honda RBPT Team before moving up to Red Bull Racing. What we can rely on is that Perez’s departure more than confirms Lawson’s place on the 2025 F1 grid.
We continue to wait.
