James Ford (Ford Escort) continued to lead the 2024 Silver Fern Rally and finished Day 3 with a 2 minute 30 second gap to Marcus van Klink (Mazda RX7) who has moved up to second place. Dean Buist (Ford Escort), previously in second, dropped down the order when his car had an oil pressure problem and is now placed 35th in the main 2WD Historic class.
Australian Nathan Quinn (Mazda RX2) crashed heavily on Special Stage 21 through Sheep Dip Rd. He was one of several cars that had a problem through this stage. The team will be trying to get the car repaired for tomorrow. Robbie Stokes (Ford Escort) has now moved into third spot.
In the 2WD Challenge class Chris Ramsey in the Toyota Corolla leads from Karl Celeste with over a 3 minute gap. In third place is Richard Galley who is driving a BMW E30.
The Silver Frond three day event came to a close today with Stephen Gill and Grant Molloy winning the event in a Ford Escort. Finishing a distant second was Peter Leicht/Bernard Keast (Ford Escort) followed by Kerry Sloan/Henry Raymond (Toyota Starlet).
Tuesday, Day 4, sees the cars rallying on the roads around South Canterbury, returning to Timaru in the late afternoon.
