It’s the penultimate round of the 2020/21 South Island Formula 1600 Championship this weekend at Timaru International Raceway with Canterbury’s James Penrose seeking to continue his season winning form.  However, his rivals will be looking at disrupting this as they hope to have their first race wins for the season.

Penrose has qualified on pole at all four rounds so far, led every lap and won all 12 races.

“We will keep trying to do the same,” commented Penrose.  “Dad’s been doing a fantastic job on the spanners and setting the car up.

“Timaru has been a fantastic track for us in the past.  Last time we had some awesome speed, so really excited to be heading there after such a short turnaround since the last round.”

There will have been just two weeks between the fourth and fifth rounds since the New Year.  This doesn’t faze current South Island championship Jack Noble-Adams.

“I enjoy Timaru and have gone well there,” said Noble-Adams.  “I’m confident of really being able to take it to James this weekend and getting passed him.”

Twenty-six entries are expected to take to the grid including rookies’ Dylan Petch (Mygale SJ12), Jacob Douglas (Van Diemen RF91) and Bree Morris (Ray GR17), all who have joined the series during the season.

Also returning is 1994/85 NZ Formula Ford title holder Shane Drake (Van Diemen RF92).

Drivers and teams face qualifying and three races over the two day weekend.
