Scoular’s astute decision

Zach Scoular’s camp have made what could turn out to be a very astute decision for the coming season.  Announced this week is that the Kiwi driver will lineup for the 2025 Eurocup-3 season with Palou Motorsport.

Scoular finished runner up in the recently completed 2025 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship, claiming Rookie of the Year, the Trans-Tasman Champion title, and the prestigious Bruce McLaren Trophy for the best New Zealand driver.

Eurocup-3, a series created as an alternative to the FIA-sanctioned Formula Regional European Championship, was born out of the Euroformula Open Championship when it struggled to attract entries in late 2022.  Competing in this series presents Scoular with a number of opportunities.

First, he gets to carry on the experience gained from a summer of racing in the Southern Hemisphere.

Second, the series races on some key and iconic European circuits – Red Bull Ring, Paul Ricard, Monza, Assen, Spa, Barcelona – giving him invaluable experience.

Third, while driving for Palou Motorsport in Europe, it also presents him with options for competing part-time in the USA.  The team’s founder, three-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou, who drives for Chip Ganassi Racing, will have strong networks and associations with the IndyCar and Formula Regional Americas communities.

While Scoular has said nothing about competing in North America, let’s not be surprised if he does make an appearance in either category.  The Eurocup-3 Series doesn’t get underway until mid-May so he will need to stay fresh over the next three months.

Indy NXT Championship gets underway on the Streets of St Petersburg in early March while the FR Americas has their first round at NOLA Motorsports Park, New Orleans at the end of March. Both options will give him exposure in the US if a 2026 European campaign isn’t an option.

Options and opportunities are what a young driver requires and Eurocup-3 gives Scoular both of these.
