NZ registered team Rodin Motorsport had a stella weekend on the streets of Baku City as the FIA Formula 2 Championship held its round in support of the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix. With one Sprint and two Feature Races over the round, Rodin Motorsport drivers Alex Dunne and Martinius Stenshorne both had three top five finishes, moving their Rodin team closer to second in the Teams’ Standings. They hold third overall just one-point behind Invicta Racing with Campos Racing 36-points ahead in first.
Dunne qualified fastest in the first of two qualifying sessions while teammate Stenshorne fastest in the second session.
Dino Beganovic secured his second consecutive win in FIA Formula 2, winning the Baku Sprint Race. Laurens van Hoepen was P2 for TRIDENT, while Alexander Dunne put on a storming drive to claim seven positions and third on the podium for Rodin Motorsport ahead of teammate Martinius Stenshorne in fourth.
In the first Feature Race, Dunne converted pole position into his first race victory for the season to put himself firmly in the title picture. The Rodin Motorsport driver led home a 1-2 for the team with Stenshorne taking second ahead of Dino Beganovic in third for DAMS Lucas Oil.
Rafael Câmara inherited victory of the Baku Feature Race 2 and takes a seven-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship ahead of Nikola Tsolov.
The Invicta Racing driver finished second on the road but was promoted to P1 once Alexander Dunne’s five-second time penalty for crossing the white line at the pit entry took effect.
The Rodin Motorsport driver dropped to third behind Tsolov, who put in a storming drive from P11 to second for Campos Racing. Stenshorne came home in fourth.
“It has been a really good weekend,” commented Dunne. “We were on the front row for both (Feature) races, took pole, and I won both races on track. Apart from one silly little mistake, in terms of driving and on my side, I do not think I left much out there, which is what I said I would do at the beginning of the weekend.
“The car was really good all weekend, and the team really turned it around. Today we probably struggled a little more, but it is not going to be perfect every time.
“I think I still managed to hang on pretty well, and the car was good enough to hang on, even though we were struggling in front of Rafa (Câmara) and Nikola (Tsolov) towards the end. Ultimately, as far as weekends go, I think it was pretty good.”
“Well, I think the team has done a great job giving both me and Alex (Dunne) a good car,” said Stenshorne. “It’s not always that you can have a car that can put it on pole position and win races. So, a big thank you to them. I think me and Alex are doing a good job as well to deliver these results, but a big thank you to the team for giving us a really good car.
Dunne is just 18-points behind leader Camara in the Driver’s Standings with Stenshorne having moved into the top ten now in seventh place. The penultimate round takes place in Qatar 27-29 November with the finale in Abu Dhabi a week later 4-6 December 2026.
