Shane van Gisbergen to drive Marcos Ambrose throwback livery

Shane van Gisbergen will run a special Quad Lock throwback paint scheme this weekend at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway for his first visit to the ‘Lady in Black’. Van Gisbergen’s Chevrolet is a throwback to his good friend Marcos Ambrose’s NASCAR Cup Series win at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International in August 2012, where the two-time Supercars champion outdueled Brad Keselowski in thrilling fashion for the win.

“It’s going to be cool running a throwback scheme for Marcos in Darlington,” commented van Gisbergen. “He has been someone who has been influential and pushing me to come over here and take every opportunity that I’ve got. He has also helped me with learning the tracks every week and what to expect on race weekends.

“To run the livery that he drove to victory back in 2012 at Watkins Glen is really cool. I appreciate Quad Lock coming on board and letting us run this special scheme this weekend in Darlington. It’s going to be a lot of fun!”

Van Gisbergen and Ambrose’s relationship goes back to their Supercars days in Australia. Ambrose has been influential in helping Van Gisbergen with his transition to NASCAR this year. Both van Gisbergen and Ambrose are two of six drivers not from the United States to win a NASCAR Cup Series race joining Daniel Suárez (Mexico), Juan Pablo Montoya (Colombia), Earl Ross (Canada) and Mario Andretti (Italy). Ambrose, Montoya, and Suárez own two victories each.

“I’m a friend and big fan of Shane as he is a true racer with amazing skills,” said Ambrose. “When Shane called to show me the throwback paint scheme I was humbled and thrilled to see it. I have fond memories of my time in NASCAR and being part of the Petty racing family.

“I feel privileged to have experienced NASCAR just like SVG is now. Darlington is one of my all-time favorite tracks and I can’t wait to see my old livery race the track with Shane driving it. I don’t think the right side will stay pretty for long though.”

Two weeks ago, at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway, Van Gisbergen and his WeatherTech team started 31st and finished 18th in his first-ever visit to the Monster Mile. Van Gisbergen and his No. 97 team currently sit 15th in the driver standings heading into the weekend.
