Stanaway, Payne get elbows out in friendly Sydney SuperNight warm-up

Reigning Bathurst 1000 winner Richie Stanaway and teammate Matt Payne hit the hire kart track today for some friendly wheel-banging ahead of this weekend’s Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight.

The Kiwi teammates got behind the wheel at Moore Park’s Hyper Karts to race under the lights just two days out from the Repco Supercars Championship’s only night racing event of the 2024 season.

Payne heads into this weekend in fine form off the back of a win on the streets of Townsville just under a fortnight ago.

The 21-year old sits fifth in the standings at the halfway point of the season, while Stanaway is currently 12th in the championship.

After announcing his retirement at the end of 2019, Stanaway sensationally won the 2023 Bathurst 1000 as co-driver alongside Shane van Gisbergen, and joined Grove Racing this year in his return to full-time racing.

Festivities for this weekend’s Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight kick off on Thursday with SuperFest – a free to the public fan event – taking place at Parramatta’s Centenary Square from 5:30pm AEST.

SuperFest will feature a signing session with all 25 Supercars drivers, as well as prize giveaways, activations, and pit stop demonstrations from reigning Pirtek Pit Stop Challenge champions Brad Jones Racing.

Supercars will take to the 3.93-kilometre circuit in Eastern Creek from Friday, with a 90-minute practice session Friday night ahead of two 200-kilometre races across Saturday and Sunday.

Toowoomba’s Will Brown leads the championship into the weekend, with his Red Bull teammate and 21-year old Gold Coaster Broc Feeney 78 points behind.

Ford stars Chaz Mostert and Cam Waters sit third and fourth after shining weekends in Townsville, while 21-year old Kiwi Matt Payne has jumped up to fifth after winning the Sunday race in North Queensland a fortnight ago.

A plethora of support categories will keep the revs running high throughout the weekend, with Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia GR Cup, V8 SuperUtes, Touring Car Masters, and National Sports Sedans all on track from Friday.
