Supercars Race 2 in Sydney – Does it get any better?

It’s been a dream start for the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship with their opening round at the Sydney Motorsport Park over the weekend.  Cam Waters won all three races, Ford dominated the round, night racing and one of the best Supercars races on Saturday evening.

Race 2 under lights in the early Sydney evening saw a duel between Waters and Broc Feeney with Will Brown joining the fray.  The fight, the contact and bumping, the redressing from Waters having spun Feeney, then holding up Brown and the race stewards giving the green light to battle and the final run to the line was nothing short of sensational.

While we have missed the likes of Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen with both leaving to compete in the USA, has Supercars finally delivered and regained our attention?

What made the difference for me was Red Bull Ampol Racing teammates recently competing in the 2025 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship. This gave us a real benchmark to measure their talent, and it didn’t come up short.

Will Brown turned up for the first two rounds and immediately impressed. He was quick and stood out when racing, for his passes and moves.

He missed the next two rounds and then was joined by Broc Feeney for the NZ Grand Prix weekend, the series finale at Highlands Motorsport Park.

Feeney has never competed in a single seater and put his car on pole, ahead of some serious talent which were race fit after the four preceding rounds.  That was extraordinary.

To get in a car in this category at a circuit you haven’t driven before and set the fastest lap takes some serious talent.  Brown was second quickest in qualifying, got the better start and went on to win the NZGP trophy.

At the weekend, I talked with a team owner about their view on qualifying.  They said that none of their team put together the ‘perfect’ or ‘complete’ qualifying lap whereas Supercars drivers have to do this in their category as the whole field is so close.  That is what Brown and Feeney did at Highlands.

Their talent is unquestionable and over the weekend we saw how good Waters and Chaz Mostert are, with Matt Payne not too far away. We could be in for a great Supercars season.
