Young guns Feeney, Payne look to shine with childhood friends at AusGP

The Repco Supercars Championship returns to action this weekend, racing in the Melbourne SuperSprint in support of the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park.

Supercars will hold four races, one each day of the Grand Prix event, making up its second event of the 2025 season.

Supercars racing in support of Formula One will offer two of its brightest young stars the chance to connect with childhood friends making their Australian Grand Prix debuts in Formula One.

Broc Feeney with Cam Waters and Will Brown

Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Broc Feeney grew up with Alpine F1 rookie Jack Doohan on the Gold Coast, both drivers the sons of motorcycling heroes in Paul Feeney and Mick Doohan.

Meanwhile in New Zealand, Grove Racing’s Payne lived on the same street as Red Bull Racing’s Liam Lawson southeast of Auckland.

Both still just 22 years old, Feeney and Payne enter this weekend’s event fourth and fifth in the Supercars standings, and figure to be among the frontrunners to claim the Larry Perkins Trophy.

Named for the six-time Bathurst 1000 winner, the Larry Perkins Trophy will be awarded to the Supercars driver who scores the most points across this weekend’s four Supercars races.

At last month’s Thrifty Sydney 500, Feeney was the driver closest to knocking off Ford’s Cam Waters, who went on to sweep the 2025 season-opener.

Matt Payne

Payne was routinely competitive in Sydney, but will be looking to turn his top five pace into podiums and race wins this weekend in Melbourne.

On-track action begins Thursday for Supercars, with one race taking place each day at Albert Park.

The Melbourne SuperSprint takes place March 13-16 on the streets of Melbourne
