Brodie Kostecki eyes first Supercars title today in Adelaide

Supercars championship leader Brodie Kostecki is on provisional pole heading into today’s racing in Adelaide, where the 25-year old could clinch his first Supercars title this afternoon.

Perth-born Kostecki, of Erebus Motorsport, was Friday’s fast man in Supercars qualifying at the VAILO Adelaide 500.

The fastest 10 drivers from Friday qualifying will contest the ArmorAll Top Ten Shootout on Saturday morning to determine pole position for Race 27 of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship.

Championship leader Brodie Kostecki set the fastest time in qualifying today to take provisional pole ahead of tomorrow’s Top Ten Shootout for race 1 of the 2023 VAILO Adelaide 500

Red Bull’s Shane van Gisbergen is the only driver who can topple Kostecki’s title chances, and qualified fourth in yesterday’s all-in session.

“Not the best day for me, unfortunately. I still don’t feel comfortable in the car, but we’ve made tomorrow’s shootout so that’s a box we needed to tick,” said van Gisbergen. “Looking at the positives, out of the car everyone has been fantastic; the team, the fans, my family and friends – it’s been amazing to have so much support from everyone.

“Our team in the garage is working super hard so hopefully we can reward them over the next couple of days. We’ll review everything tonight, work hard with the crew and focus on the shootout and the race tomorrow.”

Kostecki holds a 131-point lead over van Gisbergen heading into Saturday. Should he increase that lead to 150 or more points at the end of Saturday’s 250 kilometres of racing, he will mathematically clinch the 2023 Supercars drivers’ championship.

The 25- car Supercars field will hit the track at 9:45 a.m. ACDT Saturday morning for its final practice session of the 2023 season, before PremiAir Racing’s James Golding will be the first car out for the Top Ten Shootout at 12:05 p.m.

Race 27 of the 2023 Supercars season, a 78-lap, 250-kilometre contest, begins at 2:50 p.m. ACDT.
