Penrite Racing driver Matt Payne has emerged from a dramatic Boost Mobile Qualifying to take pole position for today’s crucial race at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 in Melbourne.
He will have the box seat when today’s 250-kilometre race gets underway at 3:30 p.m. AEDT.
Seven drivers enter this weekend in championship contention in the Repco Supercars Finals; only four will remain following today and tomorrow’s races.
All seven Finals drivers made the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, but it was Payne who reigned supreme.
Morning showers saw drivers start qualifying on wet tyres, but a quickly drying track forced teams to switch to slicks late in the opening stages of the first round of qualifying.
The four drivers who advance from Sandown will compete for a championship at the bp Adelaide Grand Final later this month.
