Ross Chastain led Trackhouse Racing with a seventh-place finish in the Jack Link’s 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on Sunday afternoon. Shane van Gisbergen finished 20th, while teammate Connor Zilisch was credited with a 26th-place finish.
“Had a decent No. 97 WeatherTech Chevrolet today,” commented SVG. “I was trying to learn the new stages and run good all day. It worked up until the end when we were involved in a decent crash coming to the checkered. Overall, a good day.”
Van Gisbergen started the 188-lap race, 33rd but quickly broke into the top-20 by lap 33. He entered the top-10 on lap 42 and was able to maintain position until the No. 97 team opted to pit a few laps later.
Van Gisbergen and team opted to run the first stage long with a select few cars and pitted with 11 laps to go and finished the stage 17th. He started the second stage 16th, and on lap 116 a multicar incident occurred giving the No. 97 Chevrolet minimal damage.
The No. 97 team made repairs, and van Gisbergen went on to finish Stage 2, 11th. In the final stage, he battled for position and ran in the top-12 majority of the stage.
Van Gisbergen looked ready to post a top-10 finish before being involved in an accident coming to the checkered flag. He was credited with a 20th-place finish.
“Definitely, some good things to take out of it and learn from,” said SVG. “A shame our finish couldn’t show for it. Onto Texas next weekend.”
The NASCAR Cup Series will return to action Sunday, May 3 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.
