SVG heads to Charlotte for a Coca-Cola

Shane van Gisbergen will make his third start in the Charlotte 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina on Sunday evening competing in the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Cup Series race. Last year, van Gisbergen finished 14th in the 600-mile race, logging one of his best oval finishes of his NASCAR Cup Series Rookie season.

“It’s a really cool race,” commented SVG. “I was competitive there last year and then obviously Ross (Chastain) won. So, should have some good stuff to build off of and apply for this year’s race.

“Just going to keep trying to score and maximize as many points as possible and not make mistakes. I’m also running the Truck again on Friday night so it should be a fun weekend!”

Van Gisbergen will be on double duty also piloting the No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race for 201 miles on Friday evening. This marks van Gisbergen’s second Truck Series race this season and third career start.

“It’s really cool to have so much support here in America,” said SVG. “I’ve especially noticed at tracks I’ve won at before and people coming back the next year. How many models they want signed and how stoked they are.

“It’s cool for them to share their memories that they’ve had from my wins with me. It’s really special! It’s cool the amount of people who take days off work on a Monday at home and watch the races, it’s epic!”

Van Gisbergen will honor Corporal Anthony “Tony” J. Smaka on the No. 97 SuperFile Chevrolet for 600 miles at Charlotte on Sunday. Corporal Anthony “Tony” J. Smaka was a soldier in the United States Army who gave his life in service during World War ll. Serving in the European Theater, he was among the American forces engaged in one of the war’s most intense and brutal campaigns, the Battle of the Bulge.

Point Standings: The recent Watkins Glen win for van Gisbergen has him back in the final spot of The Chase, 16th, six points above the cutline.
